I just watched Something's Got to Give, Marilyn Monroe's last (partial) film, and she is more stunning than ever.  I was going to make a joke about how she is not as stunning as that daybed, but that would be lame because there is Marilyn, and then everything else.

If you want to get the look, West Elm has a remarkably similar model.

Widow Daybed $550

Widow Daybed $550

Dean Martin stops by a hotel, dotted with Mid-Century Sunshades.  I love these, and I don't know why they aren't more readily available.  Design Within Reach sells one, but it is $1000 and only comes in white (two things that make no sense), and there are a few more options at inmod (but still so overpriced).

I just don't get why this product doesn't have a version on Overstock or Amazon?  The construction seems fairly standard, and it does not use any more material than other $200 patio umbrella's on discount sites.  Someone make this please.

Now that's what I call well designed.

Jack Stand Lamp

Elementary: Season 3, Episode 4

Couldn't help but notice the jack stand table lamp in the background of a scene in Elementary.  It caught my eye because my friend Nathan made jack stand pendant lamps for his design company, Eastchester & Orange.

Out of context, there is something surprisingly elegant about jack stands.  They have a balanced pyramid shape with an attractive use of negative space.

Unfortunately, Nathan has sold out of his lights, but I found a similar table lamp at Conant.

A show I love, and a bed I love, unite!

I have had my eye on the Supra Bed from CB2 for quite a while.  I have always loved its low profile, elegant caning, and cozy curves.  I was so happy to see it used in the love nest on The Affair.

As a follow up to my Ubiquitous Rug post, please observe IKEA's HENNY blanket.  It is killing me that I can't think of other sets with this blanket because I see it all the time.  ALL THE TIME!

For some reason I feel like it was in the first Thor.....but I am not rewatching that, no matter how much I love blankets.

Note: I can't seem to find it on the IKEA website anymore, so maybe it has been rotated out.  Such a shame.

The Benzy Land pillow from IKEA, $12.99, popped up in the most recent episode of Mulaney.  This pillow is one of those IKEA magic items that is well prices, unexpected, and looks good everywhere.  You can rock it in a man-cave, bohemian opium den, Cape Cod, shabby-chic boudoir, etc.  It is insta-style for design know-nothings, so jump on it.

I just watched a movie called Retreat (a physiological thriller that wasn't half bad) and I spotted an IKEA ALVINE RUTA rug.  This rug pops up in things all the time because it is IKEA perfection.  It is an affordable $249.  It is flat-woven with an easy geometric pattern in dusty yellow and blues that  complements any room.

And Hillary has one his her home:

I started watching the MTV show Finding Carter, and like all sets for teens, the kid's hang out spot is extremely colorful, and full of snacks.

Their playhouse/art studio is inside shipping containers.  I like the use of a rug on the wall to soften the space, even though I have never cared for the rug they chose.

Here is a shot of the club house exterior at night:

This space is perfectly on trend: bulb string lights, Chinese lanterns, neon cord chairs, etc.

You can purchase your very own neon acapulco chair (egg shape)....everywhere.

Fans

Have you noticed that fans are always purely functional, and whenever you see an attractive table or stranding fan it's hundreds of dollars?

I decided to seek out attractive mass-produced fan options, and low an behold, I found some that are actually affordable.

Cinni Desk Fan - This one is actually a couple hundred dollars.  I probably should have started off with a less expensive one.

Jazzing things up with tape

mtCasa-11-500x286.jpg
mtCasa-8-500x286.jpg

It is a common occurrence for a friend of mine to move into an apartment with an unattractive kitchen/bathroom/etc.  They ask me how they can spice things up, and I throw a bunch of suggestions at them: paint/collage/drape/vinyl/etc.  More often than not, they end up learning to live with the eyesore because they are not ready to put in the work/money to try and solve the problem.

Well, who ever asks me next is in luck, because I am going to suggest washi (after reading about it on Design Sponge) .  It seems like a much more user friendly alternative to vinyl, and a much easier solution than painting.  I am not sure if it ends up being cheap or pricey.  I guess it depends on the project.

I painted this wall in my dining room the old fashioned way, but I suppose I could have achieved a similar effect from using this tape.

Speaking of my dining room, I should really write a post about how to paint stripes on a wall.  All in good time.

Clock table

wood-frame-side-table-clock.jpg

I truly love this Maritime Table Clock by Angelo Mangirotti.  Yes, it's $280, but it is really striking.  However, I don't know if you can call it a table seeing as it has a slanted domed top.

It reminds me of this clock side table I had in college that I bought at Wall Mart for $10.  It looks kind of like the one to the right, except mine wasn't unbearably ugly.

Mon Oncle at the beach

This portable grill caught my eye because it is called Mon Oncle, and I thought it had something do with the movie (which it doesn't other than it looks cool).  It is made by a Spanish design company, RS Barcelona, and they jazzed it up to look like vintage briefcase.

If after five uses, it still looks cute, then this invention is genius.  But, if it looks like a suitcase pulled from the wreckage of a plane crash, then it probably isn't worth it.

Windsor Benches

In my post about Matte Black, I posted this picture of a Windsor Bench:

There is something about this image that keeps pulling me back.  It's the matte black, and the large art, and that gosh darn bench.  It's not my style at all, but I want one.

O&G Studio sells this bench, but there isn't a price on the website, which means it's a million dollars.

Capture.JPG

I was about to write that I like the O&G bench because of it's low flat back, but then I found this one (which is probably also a million dollars) by Peter Kramer:

DoubleBowbackWindsor--84K.jpg

My new conclusion is that it's the simplicity and the color of all three of these benches that makes them so lovely.

When the same bench is in a pale oak, or has too many turned spokes, it begins to feel like it belongs in a 90's entryway.  Case in point:
