Furniture

Rattan's Moment

I have been a big fan of wicker/rattan/bentwood furniture for ages and wanted to give a shout out to Carol's bed in the third season of The Last Man On Earth.

This type of furniture is hugely popular right now, and it makes sense because we, as a culture, have moved away from our 60's-Mad-Men-Mid-Century obsession and are squarely living in the age of 70's revival.  You know a trend has been fully embraced when even IKEA has made room for the style in their collection.  Here is a sampling of what is going on at IKEA right now:

Tale of Tales......

The above image can be seen in the trailer for Tale of Tales (2015) and it seduced me into watching (the first part of) the movie, so I'm posting it here so you can save yourself the agony.  This set combines two things I love:

1. Dark wood antique furniture in light spars spaces, like in American Horror Story: Coven

2. White walls that are so heavily etched that they resemble lace, like in The Night Manager

The Crown: Shout Outs

I completed the full season of The Crown and got pretty sucked in towards the end.  There are gorgeous manors and castles and palaces throughout, so here is just a hodgepodge of things that stood out to me.

The sofa fabric in Clarence House is lovely.  I can now see why this style of furniture was once considered high class, before it's descent into 90's Country Style.

These lamp posts are exquisite.

Best two minutes in the whole show is when Elizabeth goes to her underground fashion lair for a dress parade.

If I dig deep down, I can honestly say I might murder someone for this wallpaper.

Lucky for me, two weeks ago Town & Country Magazine posted and image of Aerin Lauder's office on Instagram, with a wallpaper credit, which lead me down a Google rabbit hole until I discovered Lee Jofa's Beaujeu Wp Multi.  It is the wallpaper of my dreams.

Nouveau Americana - Revisited

House of Cards: Season 4, Episode 4 - Frank Underwood traces his bodyguard's hand on the White House wall.....I presume he will be embellishing the drawing into a Thanksgiving turkey.

House of Cards: Season 2

In season four of House of Cards, Frank Underwood strolls through the White House reflecting on the time he, and the previous president, sat in elegant chairs and had a nice chat.

Don't worry, Frank.  I remember.  I could never forget about those chairs.

Oh yes, I have read all of these

All the way back in 2013, I wrote about the Mary McDonald lamp in Mindy's office, on The Mindy Project.  I have since spent three years watching and enjoying this show, and only now am noticing that HER DESK HAS A FRONT FACING SHELF!  You gotta keep it styled, but Mindy does it just right.

Outlier Outlander Chair

 Outlander: Season 1, Episode 16 - A Scottish monistary

Outlander: Season 1, Episode 16 - A Scottish monistary

This chair came out of nowhere in the season finale of Outlander.  The show is set in 1743 Scotland, during a war with the English, so it wasn't a time when craftsman were thinking up new gorgeous chairs.  But then, behold!

This chair seems to fit the room and the time period, but has such contemporary lines.  What makes it extra special is that it only has three legs.  Ingenious!

My new favorite sofa

The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) - Home of a successful actor whose decor is.......a little dated.

The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) - Home of a successful actor whose decor is.......a little dated.

In The French Lieutenant's Woman, Jeremy Irons plays a film actor who throws a cast party at his house.  After a number of scenes where people compliment his fine home, the party comes to an end, and he decides to have a think on one of the most balls-out 80's sofas I have ever seen.

Please appreciate it's droopy quality.  It's as if the sofa is covered with an enormous throw blanket, tucked in around the cushions...and yet, the arm seems to have a ribbed seam.

UPDATE:  I think the arms of the sofa have a separate fabric cap on them.  I haven't seen that product in years.  My grandma had a couch with arms caps and I used to put them on my head as if I was a nun.  If only she had this couch because I would have been one psychedelic nun.

Spitfire Chair

This is is a Devon Spitfire Leather Chair from Restoration Hardware.  They go for over $1000 a pop, and always remind me of the scene from The Aviator when Leo is caressing an airplane and freaking out about rivets.

 The Aviator

The Aviator

I have never met a real person who owns one, but they pop up in sets all the time.

Good lookin' chairs

I started watching Ray Donavan, and I am hooked.  If you put it on mute, the show would just be tough guys visiting Los Angeles mansions.

I grabbed this picture because the chairs are stunning.  They are similar to chairs I have seen in the past, but these feel more relaxed.  The stuffing is more generous, and the backs are at a semi-reclined angle.
