Bed

Rattan's Moment

I have been a big fan of wicker/rattan/bentwood furniture for ages and wanted to give a shout out to Carol's bed in the third season of The Last Man On Earth.

This type of furniture is hugely popular right now, and it makes sense because we, as a culture, have moved away from our 60's-Mad-Men-Mid-Century obsession and are squarely living in the age of 70's revival.  You know a trend has been fully embraced when even IKEA has made room for the style in their collection.  Here is a sampling of what is going on at IKEA right now:

Being a set dresser is a hard job (especially on a low budget film like I Smile Back).  There is never enough time, or money, or help, and god forbid you are the reason people are waiting around.  So it always makes me chuckle when I see sheets that are clearly right out of the bag (check out those creases!) because I have been there.  I have thought, "Should I steam these......nah, no one will notice."

The Queen of Beds

The Queen of Versailles - A "new money" master bedroom.

I highly recommend the documentary, The Queen of Versailles.  It is about a rags to riches family who made a killing in the timeshare business, and then lost it all when the market crashed in 2008.

The matriarch has predictably horrendous taste, but she does have a thing for curved upholstered bed-frames, which are a weakness of mine.

Cozy in Bed

A show I love, and a bed I love, unite!

I have had my eye on the Supra Bed from CB2 for quite a while.  I have always loved its low profile, elegant caning, and cozy curves.  I was so happy to see it used in the love nest on The Affair.

Come to bed, Madame Secretary

Madame Secretary: Season 1, Episode 1 - The Boudoir

Madame Secretary: Season 1, Episode 1 - The Boudoir

Last night I watched the first episode of Madame Secretary, and I think it is off to a strong start.  It's House of Cards meets Scandal, but with just enough Homeland that I might learn something.

But plot points aside, the best moment was when we got a glimpse of this over-sized upholstered headboard.  The style of this piece would typically not draw me in, but the scale makes it all better.

UPDATE (Sept 12, 2015):

This short post has turned out to be one of the most popular posts on the site because people really respond to this bed when they watch the show, so I have done some googling, and located the bed (or at least a version so similar that it will do).

Chalk Headboards

I know I just wrote about the show Finding Carter, but I have more to say.

Finding Carter: Season 1, Episode 2 - Carter's bedroom in her new home....which is way too decorated to make sense in the plot timeline.

Finding Carter: Season 1, Episode 2 - Carter's bedroom in her new home....which is way too decorated to make sense in the plot timeline.

Carter's chalk headboard must be the envy of all teens (and people who wish they were still teens).  It reminds me of the headboard that Joseph Gordon-Levitt had in 500 Days of Summer.

500 Days of Summer - Bedroom of a guy who doesn't believe his girlfriend when she says she doesn't want to get too serious.

I was planning on posting lots of other pictures of chalk headboards, but most of the ones on the internet are really phoning it in.  Although, I do like this one:

I appreciate the crown moldings and I like how the bed on the right uses an actual chalk board as a headboard.

Although, the fact that they did chalk rugs exposes these pictures as styled rooms and not actual functioning bedrooms.  I have a feeling that this was a catalog shoot for Anthropologie (just a hunch).

Antique Modern Furniture

I stumbled upon this incredible bed made by Hive Mind Design in Brooklyn.

It got me thinking about this mash-up trend in contemporary furniture design where classically antique elements are fused with clean modern lines and materials.

The most ubiquitous examples of this is the Louis Ghost Chair and the Bourgie Table Lamp.  Both are clean and modern, but have obvious classical elements.

And you see them everywhere!  I am particularly bitter about this because I have been wanting a ghost chair for ages and I missed the "cool" window.

Unexpected Anthropologie

When did Anthropologie.com become such a great source for interesting furniture?  There are so many unexpected and outlandish pieces.  Can you believe that this is a chain store with a branch in your local mall?
