IKEA

Rattan's Moment

I have been a big fan of wicker/rattan/bentwood furniture for ages and wanted to give a shout out to Carol's bed in the third season of The Last Man On Earth.

This type of furniture is hugely popular right now, and it makes sense because we, as a culture, have moved away from our 60's-Mad-Men-Mid-Century obsession and are squarely living in the age of 70's revival.  You know a trend has been fully embraced when even IKEA has made room for the style in their collection.  Here is a sampling of what is going on at IKEA right now:

YSL's BOJA lamps......?

For many years IKEA has sold a bamboo rattan egg-shaped table lamp called BOJA.  It always seems a little askew and has the stink of IKEA on it, so I was surprised when it popped up in the sets of Yves Saint Laurent (2014).

Yves Saint Laurent (2014) - The office off Pierre Bergé, co-founder of Yves Saint Laurent Couture House, life partner of Yves, and junk lamp aficionado.

They're freakin' everywhere....

The movie isn't great, but outside of these lamps, the sets are pretty sumptuous.  So much so that I wondered if this was actually a classic lamp and IKEA just created a knock-off......but nothing on the internet corroborated that suspicion.

Lamps aside, shout out to this art nouveau restaurant:

I spy a VITTSJÖ!

I have had my eye on IKEA's Vittsjo shelves for years, but have yet to find a reason to purchase them.  This double wide unit costs $80, and the series comes in so many other shapes and sizes.

The scale and style of this piece is just perfect.  It is contemporary without going out of style, and its proportions allow it to showcase a variety of objects.  Use it for books, kitchenware, etc.  Pack it tight, or leave a single bowl on a glass shelf.

IKEA hackers have manipulated this pieces with great results.

Spray paint the black metal for a pop of color:

Or replace the glass shelves with stained wood:

This one is a hoot.  Someone painted the shelves gold, and added a hardware to the corners to make it extra fancy:

Just Google "Vittsjo Hack" and you will find so many more images of people getting creative.

As a follow up to my Ubiquitous Rug post, please observe IKEA's HENNY blanket.  It is killing me that I can't think of other sets with this blanket because I see it all the time.  ALL THE TIME!

For some reason I feel like it was in the first Thor.....but I am not rewatching that, no matter how much I love blankets.

Note: I can't seem to find it on the IKEA website anymore, so maybe it has been rotated out.  Such a shame.

The Benzy Land pillow from IKEA, $12.99, popped up in the most recent episode of Mulaney.  This pillow is one of those IKEA magic items that is well prices, unexpected, and looks good everywhere.  You can rock it in a man-cave, bohemian opium den, Cape Cod, shabby-chic boudoir, etc.  It is insta-style for design know-nothings, so jump on it.

I just watched a movie called Retreat (a physiological thriller that wasn't half bad) and I spotted an IKEA ALVINE RUTA rug.  This rug pops up in things all the time because it is IKEA perfection.  It is an affordable $249.  It is flat-woven with an easy geometric pattern in dusty yellow and blues that  complements any room.

And Hillary has one his her home:

IKEA throws a curve-ball

Just when I thought IKEA had been relegated to starter apartments, they bust out this beauty.  It's the their Stockholm Sofa in green velvet for $999.  Everything about this sofa is current (other than the legs...maybe).  The velvet is fantastic.  The color is perfectly unexpected.  The shape and side pillows look awesome, and comfortable.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but.....I want and IKEA sofa.
