Upside Down

I would be shocked if you have seen UPSIDE DOWN (2012), a film staring Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess, and I am not recommending it, but it's worth knowing that this ball room set exists:

The concept of the film is that there are two planets positioned right next to each other.  The gravity of a planet only works on the matter that originates from that planet, and vice versa (FYI: this is not how physics works).  This means that if you are from World A and you go to a dance club on World B, you will be dancing on the ceiling (because your planet is sticking you up there), while the people from World B are dancing around on the ground like normal.

Or if you are on World B and you order a World A Cocktail, you have to drink it upside down or else the liquid will try to fly up and get back to World A where it comes from.

And if you are running an interworld dance club, you better make sure people can tango on the floor and the ceiling.

Jack Stand Lamp

Elementary: Season 3, Episode 4

Couldn't help but notice the jack stand table lamp in the background of a scene in Elementary.  It caught my eye because my friend Nathan made jack stand pendant lamps for his design company, Eastchester & Orange.

Out of context, there is something surprisingly elegant about jack stands.  They have a balanced pyramid shape with an attractive use of negative space.

Unfortunately, Nathan has sold out of his lights, but I found a similar table lamp at Conant.

Blown Glass Pendants

These blown glass pendants caught my eye (over $2000 a pop so they aren't for real people), because they are elegant while still feeling very handmade.

The line of pendants is called Neverending Glory, for Lasvit.  It was created by Jan Plechac and Henry Wielgus.

I was so wrapped up in appreciated the fixtures, that I didn't even realize that each of the lights is modeled after chandeliers found in famous theaters.

I watched the first episode of Halt and Catch Fire, and was pleasantly surprised.  There are some great, smart-mouthed, characters, and dated computer tech.  The last scene takes place in a conference room that looks mighty familiar.

It all started with the War Room in Dr. Strangelove.  Someone thought of hanging a drop-down, over-sized light fixture above a conference table, and the rest was history.

This style of lighting will be forever linked with serious decision making.  When someone sits under these lights, their face is illuminated, and the rest fades away.  It is a place for a Master-of-the-Universe to share their thoughts.

John Oliver's Last Week Tonight recently brought our attention to the design of the FIFA board room, which was directly modeled after Dr. Strangelove.  He jokes that the people who run FIFA are pretty much evil overlords, and their decor does nothing to disguise that.

I also had the great privilege to work on the TNT show, The Hero, where the Production Designer, Stuart Frossell, created his very own War Room (I picked out those horrendous modern sculptures, per the producer's request).

I had no idea that the furniture maker, whyrHymer, was just around the corner from me (figuratively).  They make beds/chairs/tables/etc, but it's their lighting that really stands out.  Each piece is more lovely than the next.

The table lamp with the brass rods has my name all over it.  Maybe I should go into the shop and just write my name on the bottom of it to make sure that they hold onto it for me until I'm ready to spend $625

Floor Lamp Heaven

Just look at that floor lamp!  Stunning!

You need to have a gigantic room to pull something like that off, but if you got it, flaunt it.

Also, I don't normally watch things on BET, but Being Mary Jane is pretty good, so I'm going to keep at it.   However, all the "rich people" sets are slick and contemporary, so I hope they start mixing it up.

I can't get enough of Susanin's

A while back I wrote about my favorite auction house, Susanin's, in Chicago.  They have fantastic things in each sale and they are really reasonably priced.......but not if you include shipping to LA.  I should probably resist perusing their auction catalogs, but I can't!  Here are my top picks in the current sale:

$50/$100 - PAIR OF GESSO AND GILTWOOD WING FORM SCONCES. With plug or wire mounting application 36" x 13" The lamp I will see again, but that lamp shade is one in a million.

Onefortythree is the light of my life

I was reading Emily Henderson's blog post about her living room, and she shows a detail shot of wall sconces.  Naturally, I assumed they were super fancy, but then she mentioned that a sconce was less than $100, and I couldn't believe it!

I followed the link the Onefortythree, a shop and blog from a lighting and furniture designer.

Can you believe that all these lights are less than $200 (and most are less than $100).

Globes globes globes

IMAG0090.jpg

Yes, I am living and working in Vienna, Austria right now.  I know you expected my first post about design in Vienna to be about epic moldings, or something like that, but it is actually going to be about globes!

After spending a day walking around the city, I wasn't up to doing a big art museum, so I decided to pop into the Globe Museum (I know, super random).   But it was fabulous!  Rooms and rooms of globes!

I didn't know much about globes going in, but now I know....a little bit.  I know that globes used to be made in pairs: terrestrial and celestial.   I know that moon globes have a blank side because we don't know what the back of the moon looks like.  I know that topography globes aren't to scale (they use a height multiplier) because you would barely be able to see Mt. Everest. And I know that I want one.

Have you been noticing globes popping up everywhere lately?  I feel like every well decorated room has a globe in the corner.  And I'm not complaining.

Globes aren't just popping up on side tables.  There has been an obvious trend in globes being turned into lights.  Typically they are halved and hung as a pendant, or a light is inserted into one so that it glows.

Lighting at Tantalo

I was recently working in Panama City on a reality TV show called The Hero (watch it please!), and I was generally unimpressed by the interior design down there, until the last night of my stay when I went to a restaurant/bar called Tantalo in Casco Viejo (old town).

Now I know that hanging some Edison bulbs from the ceiling is nothing new (thank you every restaurant in Brooklyn), but there is something about how they used the wires to create this web/netting effect which was really beautiful.

Tantalo 1.jpg
Tantalo 2.jpg

They also had this two story wall covered in greens, with glowing orb lights hung all around.  It was really stunning.

Once again, these pendant lights are not new.  What is great about them is how they are paired with the plants and the height.

If I had any interest in avant garde theater, there would be a staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream under these lights in a heart beat.
